Making Mindfulness Safer: Trauma Informed Practice for Inclusive Teaching

In this event, Rehena Harilall explores how we can bring awareness and compassion to making mindfulness teaching safer and more accessible, especially for trauma-sensitive clients from communities impacted by systemic marginalisation and racial injustice. Drawing on decades of experience in psychology, community work, and Buddhist-informed mindfulness practice, Rehena will guide participants through practical techniques and reflections to help create more inclusive mindfulness spaces that honour both cultural and personal trauma histories.

This session will offer:

✔️ Tangible tools, somatic strategies, and culturally attuned techniques that honour both personal and collective trauma histories.

✔️Nuanced distinctions between past and persistent trauma

✔️ Understanding of the ethical responsibilities of mindfulness teachers

✔️ Awareness of how conventional approaches can unintentionally harm people of colour and other marginalised groups

The session will be interactive, and participants will have the opportunity to explore innovative ideas and insights through theory, practice, and lived experience, share experiences, and gain practical tools to support trauma-informed, equity-based mindfulness practice.
